WRITERS SELECTED FOR THE TYPES SCHEME

Following our call for applications in May, we are delighted to announce that the following five writers have been selected to participate in the TYPES scheme:

TYPES (Theatre for Young People Enrichment Scheme) is a programme for writers in the West Midlands, enabling them to develop their skills in the field of Theatre for Young People.

TYPES is a joint initiative between Script and mac (the Midlands Arts Centre) and is supported by funding from Arts Council West Midlands.

 

DON'T FORGET! CALLING ALL EXPERIENCED WRITERS - BIG SCREEN VISIONS

Big Screen Visions is an extensive training and mentoring programme on writing a full-length screenplay. It is specifically aimed at experienced writers in other genres.

STAGE

 

VALLEY THEATRE COMPANY, SCARBOROUGH - NEW PLAY COMPETITION

Scarborough's award winning Valley Theatre Company are pleased to announce the first ever Valley Theatre writers competition. The award is open to all writers throughout the UK, professional or amateur, experienced or newcomers.

The brief is to create a half hour script suitable for 2 male and 2 female actors. The subject matter is open but all plays must be dialogue based requiring mimimal props and sets. They are looking for original and powerful scripts which will provide their regular Scarborough audience with thought provoking and engaging drama.

Three plays will be selected that, in the company's opinion suit the brief and style of fringe theatre. These three plays will be performed by The Valley Theatre Company during their autumn/winter season of 2006 and supported by publicity including a Yorkshire based press release.

All entries must be:

- Typed on A4 paper with double line spacing.
- Printed in a clear font with numbered pages.

- Have a front title page and list of characters.

- Include a short covering letter detailing your writing experience to date.

- Include a stamped addressed envelope, manuscript size, if you wish to have your play returned. (All plays received without SAE or without the full amount of postage will be recycled).

- Please include a cheque made payable to The Valley Theatre Company for £5 per script.

FINBOROUGH THEATRE ACCEPTING UNSOLICITED SCRIPTS

As part of a six month trial (from April to October 2006), the Finborough Theatre is now accepting unsolicited new plays. Scripts will be dealt with by the newly-appointed Literary Manager and a team of script-readers in association with the Artistic Director. They are looking for plays and new writers specifically for the Finborough Theatre , not just 'good' plays, so they ask that you read their guidelines carefully before sending any work.

POMEGRANATE THEATRE SEEKS WRITERS

Opportunity for writers with some experience...

As part of the 6th New Writing Festival at the Pomegranate Theatre in Chesterfield in March 2007, writers with some previous history of having theatre work produced are invited to take part in a developmental process, including mentoring and workshops. At the end of the process one writer will be chosen to headline the festival, and there may be scope for the other writers to have their work staged in the autumn season.

Also...Curtain Raisers Wanted

Writers wanted to submit short theatre pieces (maximum 15 minutes) for a maximum of 3 actors, on the theme of 'Changes'. The chosen pieces will be performed as 'curtain raisers' throughout the year and during the festival. For more information contact Carole Copeland (details as above).

ALFRED FAGON AWARD: 10TH ANNIVERSARY

The award of £5,000 is open to any playwright of Caribbean descent who is resident in the UK for the best new stage play in English which need not have been produced. Applicants should send 2 copies of their play with a CV, their Caribbean connection and a brief history of the play to:

CALL FOR DYSLEXIC WRITERS

Missfit Productions is currently accepting submissions from dyslexic Performance Poets, Theatre Writers and Performance Artists for an event entitled DYS (the) LEXI in March 2007 at the Barons Court Theatre, London.

Selected artists will receive:

- the opportunity to develop/present new work.

- free technical rehearsal.

-limited, but free, rehearsal space.

- free publicity (press release, postcard, website, programme).

- get constructive audience feedback.

- support finding cast/crew.

Guidelines - include the title of the work, the duration, the stage of development and your full name and contact details. No CVs - work will be judged on its own merit.

Theatre writers should submit:

- a short synopsis of no more than 500 words.

 - the first 20 pages of your script.

(Theatre writers will get a performance slot of max. 60 minutes).

SPHINX THEATRE - BRAVE NEW ROLES AWARD

Sphinx Theatre Company has announced a new award for the playwright who creates the most interesting role for a woman in a new play.

The winning playwright will be awarded £2000, and the succesful play will be presented as part of the Brave New Roles Showcase. Five additional short-listed writers will also have their pieces performed as part of the award's lunchtime showcase. The winning play will be produced in 2007/2008.

The award will go to the writer whose play contains the most interesting and strongest role(s) for a woman. Merit will be given to characters which move away from the usual stereotypes of women, often seen in theatre.

Writers must be UK residents. Plays must be over 30 minutes in length and previously unperformed. They cannot accept submissions by email or on disk. Send 2 typed, unbound copies with a covering letter and CV including all contact details to: Brave New Roles, c/o Sphinx Theatre Company, 25 Short Street, London SE1 8LJ.

WEST MIDLANDS PRODUCERS FORUM - THE 'APPRENTICE' PRODUCER PROGRAMME

A fantastic opportunity for media graduates, young filmmakers or freelancers looking to break into the film industry.

The forum is delighted to announce the launch of a mentoring programme that will offer 10 apprenticeship schemes to regional filmmakers who will receive tailored mentoring from experienced producers as well as a 2 day short film producing course.

The focus is on 'producing' apprenticeships this year , whilst also running a smaller number of apprenticeships in other areas of film production that may include script development, directing etc.

Those applying to be apprentices must live in the West Midlands and have been working in the film or television industry for a minimum of two years.

MOONSTONE INTERNATIONAL DEADLINES

The deadline for the Screenwriters' Lab applications is 1 September 2006. The deadline for the Filmmakers' Lab is 8 September 2006.

Moonstone International Screen Labs is an advanced development programme for experienced Eurpoean screenwriters and directors, who are working on feature film projects for an international audience. Applicants should have produced work either for the small or big screen, theatre, commercials or had works published.

The Screenwriters' Lab is a week long programme and offers participant screenwriters the opportunity to work on their projects in a series of one-to-one meetings with established screenwriter Advisors.

The Filmmakers' Lab runs over 16 days, during which time participant directors rehearse, shoot, edit and screen key scenes from their projects, whilst working with professional crews and actors, under the guidance of established filmmaker Advisors.

BBC Film Network

Film Network - www.bbc.co.uk/filmnetwork - is the BBC's short film showcase, screening short films from new British Filmmakers, with four new shorts every week.

The site also provides filmmakers with tools to create online profiles and exchange tips, advice and ideas and allows audiences to comment on and rate the films. It also provides links to all the great online resources that already exist through the Filmmakers Guide.

The site is currently a trial but will launch in October with new features including full screen downloads and collaborative filtering features that allow the site's community to select the 'best' films.

COLLIDE CALL FOR ARTISTS

Following the success of the past 6 years, Collide is returning to commission new work by minority ethnic artists, and organisations working with minority ethnic artists in the West Midlands area.

Collide is offering awards of up to £5000 for innovative arts projects. They're open to all artforms including film and new media, visual and performing arts.

Collide projects will be showcased during the September 2007 Collide West Midlands Festival.

Light House is seeking to appoint a creative person as Project Assistant for PLOT.

Full time - 37 hours per week (flexi-time).

Salary Grade 2-3 £12,545-£14,376

The successful candidate will assist and support the Project Co-ordinator in the running of the PLOT project.

THE 2006 BIRMINGHAM BOOK FESTIVAL WILL RUN FROM WEDNESDAY 4TH TO FRIDAY 13TH OCTOBER

This year's programmme includes a number of writing workshops and an 'in conversation' event with Willy Russell.
