| Were you
there? Photos and a report of the Script launch…
An action-packed day of events marked the launch
of Script at Birmingham Rep. Writers attended
a two-hour ‘taster’ workshop on writing
for television and how to approach the industry
with their work. Leading the session was script
development executive and screenwriter Claire
Ingham.
For yet more inspiration, we all went into the
Main House to see playwright, screen and radio
writer Frank McGuinness in conversation with playwright
Kaite O’Reilly. Frank spoke engagingly about
his early development as a writer and offered
plenty of useful advice and encouragement to the
many writers in the audience.
Then it was party time in the Mezzanine Bar as
we ate, drank and celebrated. Guests were also
able to listen to short radio plays at ‘listening
posts’ provided by Talking Birds. Patron,
David Edgar, marked the occasion by toasting the
success of Script.
The finale of the day was a Script Slam in The
Door. Compered by Spiel Unlimited’s Sara-Jayne
Arbury and Marcus Moore, the evening consisted
of four short plays written by teams of two writers.
A judging panel was elected to score each of the
plays on various aspects.
First up was ‘The Duck Bath’ by Stephanie
Dale and Don Kinch. Then we saw ‘Press Night’
by Charlotte Goodwin and Craig Stephens. After
the interval it was ‘Departed’ by
Rupi Dhami and Annalisa Hounsome. And finally,
‘Sandwiched’ by Chantal Hopkins and
Tim Jefferies, which emerged as the overall winner
of the Slam. Everyone was very excited about the
Script Slam and we’re hoping to do more
in the future.
Thanks to everyone who came to the launch and
celebrated with us. We hope you enjoyed all the
events as much as we did.
