NEWS - October 2004
New
Theatre Works, the resident company
at The Courtyard, Hereford, has built a national
reputation with its new texts performed in the
theatre and its devised site-specific work.
As a
result of its successful village hall tour of
It's a Cook-Up, NTW is setting up a small
local tour of eight rural Herefordshire churches.
An important component of this project is to commission
a play.
Script
Brief:
The
piece must be lively and entertaining. Humour
is acceptable!
The
piece should address such issues as the role of
the church in the 21st Century and its apparent
demise as the hub of the community in earlier
times. Does it have a significant role at all
in contemporary life? Has spiritual practice evolved
beyond the focal point of any building?
The
emphasis is cultural rather than religious. Past
meets present through the conduit of an old rural
church and its affiliated people. The history
of the region should play a significant role and
the narrative should ideally be drawn from historical
fact, however loosely. It might follow the fortunes
of one family.
Music
must be a theme that is integral to the piece
and not a supporting dramatic device. The cast
will consist of five actors/musicians. Virtually
no set.
Please submit a synopsis and sample
dialogue from the first scene, plus one example
of recent complete work.
The
deadline is: 15 January 2005

and Reading Borough Council Launch the first phase
of HYDROPONIC
writernet,
the UK's national support organisation for dramatic
writers, and Reading Borough Council, have launched
the first phase of Hydroponic with a call to recruit
four culturally diverse writers from across the
UK to take part in an apprenticeship programme
based at South Street Arts Centre in Reading.
Funded
by Reading Borough Council and Arts Council, South
East, Hydroponic is a new perfming arts project
aimed at unearthing and developing the very best

from November 2004 and culminate in performance
showcases in July 2005.
Hydropnic
combines writers from across the UK with practitioners
in Reading and the South East in three phases
of activity:
- a
specially designed first draft commission and
dramaturgical support programme for 4 produced
writers
- a
professional development programme for a further
6 emerging writers
- performance
laboratories for actors, directors and writers
In providing
opportunities for a cohort of playwrights, directors
