INCUBATE

A new two-year development scheme for spoken word artists in the UK, which offers participants time, space and inspiration for them to experiment with their work.  Run by Apples & Snakes, BAC, Birmingham Rep and Contact, Incubate is a paid programme for six spoken word artists and six artists from other artforms, who will work together in 'creative laboratories'. The programme will run from December 2007, and the first stage will involve two-week stints at BAC, Birmingham Rep and Contact, where participants will follow the the development process that each of the venues uses with its artists.  At the end of October 2008 the participants will make proposals for hiow they would like to use the second stage, and a number of those will continue into the next year, culminating in work-in-progress showcases.

You will also need to send a 'statement of intention', ie what you would bring to Incubate, what you want to gain from it, where you are with your work and where you want to be. Those who are shortlisted will be invited to a workshop/audition day.

Arvon Foundation presents: WRITING TO PERFORM

A course for anyone interested in performing what they write - from poem to monologue to full-sized play.  We will explore the interaction between our writing voice and our performance voice.  We will look at how we give ideas a communicable action; how we connect with our audience; how we balance what we want to say with how we want it said.

Tutors: Tim Crouch and a smith

Tim Crouch's plays include winner of a Prix Itali, My Arm (Faber and Faber), and An Oak Tree (Oberon), which won a Herald Angel award. Both plays have run in New York and London.

a smith's work fuses forms of performance, theatre, installation, written and visual art.  He is a long-term collaborator with Tim Crouch; working together on An Oak Tree and on Tim's most recent play, england.

THEATRE TRAIL COMPETITION 2008

Drip Action Theatre is launching its eighth Theatre Trail competition for 2008.  The competition is looking for one-act plays to be performed as part of next year's Arundel Festival.  The event is held during the last week in August and consists of eight short plays performed every day, throughout the day at eight different locations all over Arundel.

Drip Action Theatre is calling on writers of all abilities and experience to submit new entries for next year.  Plays will be selected for performance by a panel of three judges, with one overall winner receiving the Joy Goun Award of £100.  The theme can be any genre so long as it has a realistic cast number and can be staged simply with minimum scenery and props.  Your play should be 30-40 minutes in length and suitable for a daytime performance.

HIGHTIDE 2008: CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

HighTide is now looking for new full-length scripts from emerging writers for the 2008 Festival, which takes place between 2-5 May

  • Scripts in performance should be no longer than 1hr 30 mins
  • Selected writers will receive £3000 in respect of a one-year exclusive option
  • Applicants must be resident in the UK or Ireland
  • Writers may submit one unproduced, unpublished full-length play.  There is no restriction on subject matter.
  • Scripts must have a title page with author's name, address and telephone number. Scripts will not be returned.
  • Please send all submissions to: HighTide Festival, Adam House, 7 Adam Street, The Strand, London, WC2N 6AA
  • If possible, the play should also be emailed to: scripts@hightidefestival.org. Please enter your name and title of script in the subject line.

Drama Association of Wales Presents:

ONE ACT PLAYWRITING COMPETITION 2008

The competition aims to encourage the writing of plays for amateur theatre in English and Welsh.  In addition to cash awards, prize-winning plays will be considered for publication.

POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN WRITING FOR PERFORMANCE

City College, Manchester

At the heart of each script is a writer.  The focus of the course is to enable you the writer to produce your own work with a heightened sense of what the writing process actually involves.  Recent graduates have found commissions with BBC North, as well as having their work showcased at leading theatres and festivals.

This intensive one-year programme starts in January 2008.  Essentially the time commitment is one day per week (Mondays) plus one fortnightly evening session (Tuesdays)

SUBMISSIONS WANTED FOR MENAGERIE THEATRE COMPANY

East Anglia's premiere new writing company is searching for the best new talent in the region.

If you have a script that you would like us to consider for a rehearsed reading or even for the Hotbed Festival 2008 then please send the following:

  • a covering letter
  • a one-page plot synopsis, including character outline
  • a 10-15 page extract from your script
  • a self-addressed stamped envelope

Menagerie is also holding several workshops with award-winning playwright Fraser Grace (currently under commission to the National Theatre).  All writers, however experienced, are welcome to attend, and the course is a good opportunity to get to know Menagerie in advance of commissioning opportunities for Hotbed. RADIO

WRITING HISTORIES: A RADIO DRAMA COMPETITION

Crystal Clear Creators, an arts organisation based in the East Midlands, is pleased to annouce a new radio drama competition.  The competition is available to all, and will culminate in the production of the three winning radio dramas.

Entrants are invited to write a one page proposal for a possible radio drama of up to 45 minutes in length on a historical theme.  From the entries, the best three proposals will be chosen by a panel of judges.  The writers of these winning proposals will be given the opportunity to develop the full scripts, whilst receiving mentoring from experienced writers.  The three radio dramas will then be recorded and produced by Crystal Clear Creators.  We will then boradcast them via the organisations website, and we will promote them to local and regional radio stations.

WRITING RADIO DRAMA - A Residency for Disabled Writers

We are looking for talented writers with an original and entertaining voice to take part in an expenses-paid, week-long residency on writing audio drama.

Blood and Water Screenwriter Required

Bradford on Avon based director/producer Roger Pyne has produced three period costume dramas at an amateur level and is now planning a low-budget sci-fi feature aimed at the DVD market and perhaps American cable TV.  He has a story that needs developing into a screenplay and is looking for a writer keen to work in a team of creative people.

4Talent - PILOT

PILOT is an opportunity for drama screenwriters to win the chance to have their work produced and screened on Channel 4.  They are inviting exciting, talented writers to submit a treatment for a six-part drama series, an outline for a pilot episode for that series, and a script for a sample scene from that episode.

12 writers will be selected to take part in a packed weekend of industry workshops and masterclasses.  They will then be hot-housed in one of three Scottish independent productions companies, where mentoring producers and Channel 4 script editors will help them develop their series idea and complete a first draft script.  After 8 weeks of paid training, each writers will pitch to a selection panel.  Only one idea from each production team will be selected.  These 3 writers, along with their producesr, will hotfoot it down to Channel 4's HQ in London to pitch to 4Talent and the Channel's Commissioning Editor for Drama, Sophie Gardiner.

SCREEN WEST MIDLANDS - DIGISHORTS 07/08

digishorts offers you the chance to develop and produce a short film with support from Screen WM and the UK FIlm Council, including a budget of up to £10.500.  The scheme is open to film-makers with at least one short film on a showreel already, or moving artists, designers, animators etc with at least on equivalent piece of work to view.

This year there are two deadlines:

5pm Monday 26th November 2007 - apply to this deadline if you have not made a Digital Short previously.

5pm Monday 28th January 2008 - apply to this deadline only if you have made a Digital Short with us previously, and do not wish to develop your idea with us through the lab.

Lectures about writing are like poems about swimming: they may be inspiring but they don't improve your technique.  The only way to learn how to write is by writing.

Over the weekend you'll participate in intensive, practical exercises that are designed to develop the basic skills you need to make your material funny in any format or medium you're writing for: film, television, radio, theatre, stand-up, or print.

This is a play for Birmingham people by a Birmingham author, Alan J Gray.  Directed by Jeni Hatton, a locally based actor/director, it happens in two distinct but not separate timescales.  The play is an atmospheric piece of new writing that explores the effects of war, both on the people sent to fight and those that are left behind.

SHORT FILM IS DEAD: LONG LIVE SHORT FILM!

ZAK IN THE BOX by Robert Warrington

The Crescent Theatre, 7.45pm

Inspired by his own experience of group therapy, this is Robert Warrington's second full-length stage play.  It uses elements of black comedy, straight drama and physical theatre to show what happens when five very different Brummies are brought together in one extraordinary group.

A live music theatre performance, spearheaded by film and music maverick Don Letts that seeks a contemporary response to the 200th Anniversary of the abolition of the British slave trade.  Seven cutting edge lyricists including rapper and poet Skinnyman, human beatboxer Mad Flow and spoken word artist Malika Booker, will examine the concept of slavery in 2007's mulit-cultural generation.  Also including Shane Solanki, Yusura Wasarma, Decipher, RT, and a set by Don Letts himself.
